Synthetic Turf

This course begins with a brief history of synthetic turf.  The advantages are covered in depth, followed by manufacturing techniques and then the various interior and exterior turf applications.  For exterior installations, construction and drainage are addressed including the surface / subsurface soil survey to decide on the necessary preparations for the turf base.  The importance of a one-time proper installation is stressed with a discussion of the turf layout, turf breaths, sewn seams, glued seams, inlays, and proper infill techniques.  Safety of workers from heat and dangerous heavy machinery is explained.  Health of turf users will be addressed using industry reports noting the insignificance of lead in synthetic turf or the crumb rubber infill material.  For athletic fields, evaluation for proper player impact is discussed.  Interior and exterior maintenance will be presented with an emphasis on winter exterior maintenance.  The presentation will end with discussing the qualities of a good contractor and the necessity of proper installation training for both today and tomorrow.
