Built to Last, Season Two: The Green Home!

Posted: 8/9/2011

Looking to continue the television success of Built to Last and create a potential driver for green construction industry growth, season two—Built to Last – The Green Home—will hit the airwaves in 2012. Backed by the Chicago Regional Council of Carpenters' Labor and Management Committee and once again in production partnership with Lakeshore Public Television, season two will showcase the construction of a green home designed and built to incorporate energy-efficient practices, environmentally friendly materials and cost-saving, innovative products.

"Viewers will enjoy having the opportunity from the comfort of their homes to be exposed to some of the processes involved with the building of a green home using innovative technology and leveraging oversight from industry experts," said Carpenters President Frank Libby. "For anyone considering buying or even remodeling a home, Built to Last - The Green Home will change how they consider home options now and in the future."

The Briarcliffe Subdivision in Lemont, IL, was the site chosen for the construction and filming of "The Green Home."

"We're excited about this project coming to Lemont," said Mayor Brian Reaves.  "Green housing is very topical and timely, and we look forward to working with Lakeshore and the Carpenters union in producing the documentary."

Construction of "The Green Home" will commence this fall with the objective to build an energy-efficient home that will comply with the U.S. Dept. of Energy's Builders Challenge and the U.S. Green Building Council rating system. Builders Challenge homes, for example, achieve a rating of 70 or lower on the EnergySmart Home Scale; a 70 rating means that a home is 30 percent more efficient than one built to code. The goal was to meet a budget comparable to a conventional home.

From the conceptual design to the final nail, viewers will see what it takes to build a quality green home that is committed to environmental planning while keeping to a tight deadline and a realistic budget.  The show will follow skilled carpenters and signatory contractors as they perform their jobs, introducing viewers to the realities of the processes involved while informing them about some of the newest green- building techniques and products.

Built to Last – The Green Home will encompass 13 episodes shot in high-definition, and will air on a national level across dozens of markets beginning mid-2012. Built to Last, season one, will also air nationally in early 2012.
