Carpenters Skill Advancement Program

In the last 15 years the Carpenter Skill Advancement Program (CSAP) has grown to 300 classroom and hands-on classes offered every six months in a wide range of general knowledge, general skill, special skill, certification and safety classes. 40,000 schedules are printed twice a year and sent to all members and signatory contractors. Last year 7,100 apprentices or journeymen applied for this training to advance their careers.

Classes are from
3 to 40 hours long, being taught in English, Spanish, and Polish. Most CSAP classes are offered at the Elk Grove Village center, with more being offered at the Chicago, Joliet, and Elgin centers every year. Cost is from free for any safety class to $99 for the Supervisory Training (STP) classes, with most classes from $20 to $45. Some local unions reimburse students for a completed class

Carpenters rally for the Employee Free Choice Act

Hundreds of members from the Chicago Regional Council of Carpenters joined thousands of other organized labor members in a rally to support the passage of the Employee Free Choice Act (EFCA) on February 17th at Plumbers’ Hall in Chicago. Many national union leaders and politicians also attended.
Working people are struggling to get by, and America’s middle class is disappearing fast. But when workers try to form unions and bargain for better benefits, wages, and working conditions corporations use coercion and harassment to stop them.
This Bill protects a workers right to organize; it is being called the most important labor law reform in more than 40 years.

The Employee Free Choice Act would:
• Establish stronger penalties when companies violate the rights of workers forming unions and negotiating first contracts.
• Provide mediation and arbitration when workers and the employer can’t agree on a first contract.
• It gives workers a choice between secret ballots and majority sign-up.

Local 13 carpenter honored by Governor

When he stepped off the elevator at Teamster City, Local 13 carpenter Dan Biggane saw an unconscious man sprawled on the floor before him. The man had no pulse. Fortunately, Dan had completed CPR training, so he took immediate action. For five minutes, which to Dan seemed like forever, he administered CPR until the fire department arrived.“I kept screaming at him,” said Dan. “Come on. You are going to live. If I have to push your chest to your spine, you are going to live.”
Thankfully, he did survive and Dan, the firefighters and the paramedics were honored by Governor Pat Quinn on February 13 at a ceremony at the State of Illinois Building.Dan is not the only carpenter who has saved lives in recent years: Brian Meechan saved a child from choking; Pat Hagerty saved a boy at a train station; Adam Gutierrez and John Reynolds gave CPR to victims of a car crash; and Jan Kluzura used CPR to save a man who had fallen down an elevator shaft.

Thanks to Local 13 Representatives Mike Sexton and Tommy Ryan for sending Dan to CPR training.
“This stuff works, guys,” added Dan. “Take the class. If I can do it, you can, too.”
